Core checklist
Documents to prepare
Start with these core items, then use the supporting sections for evidence relevant to your circumstances and travel purpose.
- Current passport valid for travel to the United States—normally at least six months beyond the intended stay, unless an exemption applies.
- DS-160 online nonimmigrant visa application confirmation page with barcode.
- Visa application fee receipt, if the local instructions require proof before interview.
- VAC and consular interview appointment confirmation for applicants in India.
- One printed photograph meeting U.S. specifications only if the DS-160 photo upload failed or the post instructs you to bring one.
Purpose and travel plans
- Proposed itinerary with intended dates, destinations and accommodation details.
- For tourism or family visits: evidence explaining the trip and whom you plan to visit, where relevant.
- For eligible business visits: meeting, conference or event details and correspondence from the inviting organisation.
- Previous passports and U.S. visas, where relevant.
Employment, study and home ties
Evidence should help show your circumstances in India and intention to leave after the visit.
- Employment letter stating role, salary, service and approved leave, plus recent salary slips.
- Business owners: registration, activity evidence and relevant tax or financial records.
- Students: enrolment confirmation, identity card and approved leave.
- Family, residence or other commitments in India where relevant.
Financial evidence
- Recent personal bank statements showing available funds and their credible source.
- Income evidence such as salary slips, income-tax records or business financial documents.
- If another person pays: their finances, identity, relationship to you and what they will cover.
Case-specific documents
- For minors: birth certificate and appropriate parental consent or custody documents.
- Medical, family-event or other evidence relevant to the stated purpose.
- Any additional documents requested by the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Important notes
- A visitor visa does not permit employment or regular study in the United States.
- An invitation letter or Affidavit of Support is not required for a visitor visa; the decision rests on the applicant’s eligibility and circumstances.
- Do not make final non-refundable arrangements until a visa is issued.
